Bill Bomar was born in Davidson County, Tennessee to William M., Sr. and Mattie Levina Bomar on July 29, 1921. He died of cancer at Sloop Memorial Hospital in Crossmore, North Carolina at the age of 65 on May 27, 1987.
He was interred at Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Newland, North Carolina.
He was survived by his wife Marjorie, children and grandchildren.

Bill Bomar Memorial Tribute Service

A special service to honor one of the area's most accomplished and beloved personalities has been scheduled. The "Memorial Tribute Sunday" will commemorate and celebrate the late Dr. Bill Bomar's life, his triumphs, his legacy and his profound effect on the lives of many people as a minister, school principal, teacher, athlete, coach and friend to all. The service will mark thirty years since Bomar's passing.
The tribute will be held Sunday, May 28, at 11:00 a.m. at Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church, located on Bob Taylor Road, just off Little Buck Hill Road in the Three Mile Community of Avery County. A meal on the church grounds and a special dedication at Bomar's gravesite in the church cemetery will follow the tribute service. Those attending are asked to bring a meat, dessert or vegetable dish.
Bomar pastored the church several years before passing away in 1987 after a brave battle with cancer. His youngest son, Kurt, currently the church's pastor, will lead the memorial tribute service.
Bill Bomar was a legendary coach, known to many in this region as an assistant football (Offensive Coordinator) and assistant baseball coach at Avery County High School, where he taught world history and physical education. Before his tenure at Avery High, Bomar was head football coach, athletics director and a physical education instructor at Lees-McRae College.
Prior to coaching in this region, Bomar was a long-time head prep football, baseball, track and boys and girls basketball coach. He also was a high school principal. Bomar coached in Georgia and Florida and led numerous championship teams, including a state championship football team at Dunnellon, FL High in 1963. He also directed traditional sports powers Southeast and Palmetto, FL High Schools to high levels of baseball and football success, as a head varsity coach in each respectively.
Additionally, Bomar was a head junior varsity baseball coach on the collegiate level at the University of Georgia, where he also played varsity football and baseball and earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees. Bomar concluded his playing career with professional baseball's Chicago Cubs.
The Bomar Family and the Walnut Grove Church congregation invites Bomar's former students, athletes he coached, his teaching and coaching peers as well as anyone else who would like, to attend the special service.
