Irene Ricker King

September 24, 1926 - October 20, 2018

Irene R. King passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 20, 2018, at her home in Palmetto, Florida. She was born September 24, 1926, in Greeneville, Tennessee, to Pearl and Arthur Ricker, Sr. She married James King, Sr. on June 25, 1943 in Greeneville. The couple moved to Palmetto in 1959.

She worked for the School District of Manatee County as a registrar at Palmetto High School and was known as the "queen of guidance."| She retired from the school district in 1991 after 23.5 years of service. After retirement, Irene enjoyed traveling with her family to many places around the world. She loved playing and watching tennis. She enjoyed walking, riding her bike and exercising. She enjoyed working on Thomas Kinkade puzzles, reading Danielle Steele novels, and visiting the mountains of North Carolina.

She will be remembered for many things by her family: eating grapefruit every morning, jello in the refrigerator, homemade biscuits, the best Rice Krispy treats, Christmas Eve gatherings, her appreciation of nice things, and her impeccable taste, to name a few. Irene was every bit a lady from her tailored clothes to her attention to detail. She loved her family and she loved spending time with them.

Irene is survived by her daughter, Darlene Kronemann; four grandchildren, Trevor (Melanie) Kronemann, Tisha (Tim) Conaway, Kristi (Duane) Mathis, and Sammy Wood; eight great grandchildren, Anika, Nadia, and Nikolas Kronemann, Skyler and Spencer Wood, CJ and Elliot Conaway, and Kelton Mathis; her brother, Arthur (Jeanette) Ricker, Jr; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents Pearl and Arthur Ricker, Sr; her husband of 43 years, James King, Sr.; her son, James Spencer King, Jr.; her daughter, Sylvia Wood; her sister, Helen Collins; and her companion, Sam Baker.

Funeral services will be held November 6, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church of Palmetto, 330 11th Ave. W, Palmetto, Florida. The family will receive visitors from 12pm -1pm at the church with the service beginning at 1pm. Burial services will be held immediately following the service at Mansion Memorial Park, Ellenton, FL. The Rev. Stephen Rasmussen will be officiating. Due to Irene's love of tennis, the family invites you to make a donation in memory of Irene to the Palmetto High School Tennis Team, 1200 17th St. W, Palmetto, FL 34221 or to Team Junior Tennis, Inc., 6033 34th Street West #12, Bradenton, FL 3421.
