Anne Louise Burgess Murphy Chittum

November 20, 1912 - October 21, 2007

 

Louise B. Murphy (Chittum), 94, passed away on October 21, 2007 at Tandem Health Center, Tallahassee, Fla. She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Murphy of Ellenton and sister, Katherine Burgess of Tallahassee, Fla. She was born November 20, 1912 in South Carolina to Junius Melton Burgess and Julia Helen (Mitchell) Burgess.

Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, FL (850-877-8191) is handling arrangements. Private family services will be held. Louise is interred at Oakland Cemetary, Tallahassee, Florida.

She went to her first day of school in a horse and buggy. She graduated from FSU in 1935 and taught at Palmetto High School from 1936 to 1953. She then taught in New Mexico for six years and returned to Palmetto in 1959. She retired as Chairman of the English Department in 1973. Louise remarried in 1975 in Reno, Nevada to Harold Joseph Chittum. Her husband worked for the National Park Service and was stationed at Mt. Ranier. Later they settled in Port Angeles, Washington.

She enjoyed remarkably good health till her husband died in 2001. She moved back to Tallahassee with her sister. She had been in Tandem for two years. She died of a severe stroke that left her paralyzed on her right side and unable to speak.

The last thing my mom said to me on the phone the day before was ''I love you best of all.''
I love you too, Mom, ''best of all.''
